Secondary General Music Lesson Ideas
Lesson(s) Sequence
1. Play Don't Stop Believin' as students find their seats.
2. Can anyone sing the tune of the song we just listened to? Introduce the term Melody and ask students to write the
definition in their CNW.
Definition: Melody is a series of single pitches that occur one after the other in a line.
3. The Melody is just another name for "tune" and is the most memorable part of a piece of music. Show the music for
Happy Birthday so students can see the Melody. The Pitches in a Melody are considered to have a horizontal relationship.
4. Explain the Melody can be:
* sung/played by a single person
Sing Happy Birthday alone
* sung/played by more than one person as long as they are singing/playing the same pitches.
Ask students with the same voice part to sing Happy Birthday with you
* sung/played in different octaves - such as lower and higher voices/instruments together - as long as they are singing/playing
the same pitches.
Ask all students to sing Happy Birthday with you
