Lesson(s) Sequence

1. Introduce the term Monophonic Texture and ask students to write the definition in their CNW.

Definition: Texture - the number and type of musical “layers” found in music.

Definition: Monophonic Texture - a single melody (layer) sung/played alone, or with others singing/playing in octaves.

2. Most music has multiple layers. Listen to your favorite song. Chances are, it has a singer layer, some background instrument layers, like a

guitar and bass, and a percussion layer.

Which layer is the melody? Melody is oftentimes the most memorable part of music and is usually what you would sing.  If a piece of music has a vocalist, usually the singer's layer is the melody. Therefore, if you strip away all the other layers, you would get Monophonic Texture. Listen to an example of what this would sound like.
