1. Introduce the term Melodic Ostinato and ask students to write the definition in their CNW.

 

Definition: Melodic Ostinato is a short, repeated melody pattern which is intended to be performed together with another

 melody to produce harmony and polyphonic texture.

   

    Let's listen to an example of Melodic Ostinato now that you know the term.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. As a class, create 2 Melodic Ostinati that create Harmony and Polyphonic Texture in Row Row Row Your Boat.

 

* Teach song, if necessary, by rote

* Create Ostinato 1

* All students sing Ostinato 1

* Split students into two group and have group 1 sing the song and group 2 sing Ostinato 1. Layer in parts.

* Switch parts between groups

* Create Ostinat 2

* All students sing Ostinato 2

* Split students into three groups and assign parts.  Layer in to perform.
