Harmony &
Polyphonic Texture
~ Partner Songs

Lesson(s) Sequence
1. Another way to produce Harmony with Polyphonic Texture is singing/playing Partner Songs. Introduce the term Partner Song and ask
students to write the definition in their CNW.
Definition: A Partner Song is when the melodies of two separate songs are performed at the same time and sound
good together, which then produces harmony for each other.
2. An example of a simple Partner Song is pairing Row Row Row Your Boat with Mary Had a Little Lamb. As a class sing these two songs as a Partner Song.
3. Partner Songs are not just for little kid songs - we actually hear them today but we call them "mash-ups". I want you to listen to the two
excerpts. The first is Forget You by Cee Lo Green and the second is Since You've Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson.
Now let's watch a video of the group Petatonix using both songs in a mash-up (or Partner Song).
Even though Forget You and Since You've Been Gone are different songs by different artists, the Harmonies they produce when performed at the same time sound good together.
Another example is this mash-up of six Country songs by different artists that Sir MashAlot (Gregory Todd) created.
Both of these are examples of successful mash-ups or Partner Songs.
