Lesson(s) Sequence

1. Play Hallelujah as students are finding their seats.

2. Ask students to take out their Classroom Notes Worksheet (CNW) binder.

3. We have talked about and played Chords in previous lessons.  Ask students to write the definition in their CNW.

Definition: A Chord is a group of notes played simultaneously.

4. We hear Chords all the time.  For example, when we sing Happy Birthday and I play some accompaniment on the

piano, I am actually playing chords. This is what it looks like in my music.

Notice the Melody (blue arrow) and the chords (red arrow). As you can see, the Chords are groups of notes, either 3 or 4, that are "stacked" on top of each other, or played simultaneously.

5. Split students up into 3 groups. Assign each student a note - should equal I, IV, V chords found in Happy Birthday.

Students should be able to read the score and play on their assigned chords while singing Happy Birthday. Students should also be able to identify their note in the Chord.
