Secondary General Music Lesson Ideas
Human Tic-Tac-Toe
Materials
9 Chairs/Desks
Music Questions
Optional: X and O sheets - 5 of each per board
Directions
1. Create a large tic-tac-toe pattern with the chairs/desks (3 x 3 rows). It is possible to have more than one "board" going
at a time.
2. Split students into two teams per board - Xs and Os. Give them the X and O sheets (optional). Decide which
team per board goes first.
3. Teacher reads a question.
4. The students in Team 1 discuss what the right answer is, then choose a spokesperson to either say it out loud (one
board in classroom) or come to the teacher and whisper the answer (more than one board in classroom).
5. If the Team 1 spokesperson says the right answer:
a. they sit in an empty chair on the board (other team members may help them strategize as to where they
should sit).
b. after they are seated on the board, they may not help their team discern the correct answer (must remain
silent).
6. If the Team spokesperson says the wrong answer, they must remain with the rest of their team and wait until their Team's
next turn to have a chance to put a person on the board.
7. Alternate between teams AND spokespersons - everyone should have a chance. Students may also want to stragegize
which members should go first etc. to have the best chances to win.
8. Points are given to the first team who creates three in a row (tic-tac-toe). Points are tally marks, and there is one point
for each game. In the case of a stalemate, the ruling is a draw and both teams receive one point.
