Rhythm Flashcards

Directions

 

1. Split students into teams of 4-5 persons.  Each team should have the same number of people as the others.

 

2. Have students sit or stand in a line all facing one way.

 

3. The student at the back of the line from each group comes to you so they can see the flashcard.

 

4. The students silently memorize the rhythm and then return to their seats/position in the line.

 

5. When you give the signal, the team member gently taps the rhythm out on the should of the team member in front of

them.

If the team member thinks they understand the rhythm that was tapped on their shoulder, they should nod their head "yes" and precede to tap the rhythm on the team member in front of them.

 

If the team member would like the rhythm to be tapped on their shoulder again, they should shake their head "no".

 

6. When the front person receives and understands the rhythm tapped on their shoulders, they should raise their hand.

 

7. Teacher should wait until all front team members have their hands up.  Also, it is importatn to remember the order in

which the teams raised their hands (in case the first team gets it wrong).

 

8. First person to raise their hand has the first chance to clap the rhythm.

 

If they clap the rhythm correctly, their team receives a point for that round. 

 

If they clap the rhythm incorrectly, the next fastest team to raise their hand gets a chance to "answer". This can keep going until either a "right" answer has been given or all the teams have had a chance.

 

Optional: Instead of this step, ask students to draw the rhythm on the board.  First group to write it 

       correctly receives the point.

 

9. Students move up one seat after each round - rotating who receives the rhythm originally from the teacher and who is

responsible for clapping the rhythm at the end.

 

10. Points are tally marks, and there is one point for each round.
