Secondary General Music Lesson Ideas
Perception
vs
Reality

Directions:
Students often have 'skewed' ideas about classical music, especially classical music used in popular culture. Since all of this music has been taken out of context - and given a new context - it is important to inform students of the 'reality' rather than having them rely on their 'heavily influenced by pop culture' perceptions.
Below are two PowerPoints that illustrate this idea. The first is J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue (often associated with Halloween) and Julius Fučík's Entry of the Gladiators (often associated with the circus).
The following YouTube videos are lessons by my former students that show how classical music is often similar to music found in pop culture.
