Music That
Defines You
Assignment
Directions: In order for me to get a good sense of your own personal music tastes, please submit 4-6 songs that you:
1. Can't live without
This doesn't mean you have to listen to them every day, but they should be songs that every time you do hear them it reminds you of how much you really, really like them (basically, they never get old).
2. Are in any genre
Remember, there are many, many, many styles and fusions of music.
3. Should be clearly labeled
Include the name of the song and the artist - because I'm sure I won't know all or even most of the songs!
4. Are special to you
Write 2-3 sentences for each song about why it is special to you.
5. Define who you are
One song should be something you can personally relate to (either the music and/or lyrics). MAKE SURE this song is CLEARLY MARKED as the one that defines you!!! Again, I want to know why; however, if the reason is too personal, you may talk to me about it later, or write just the general gist in the text.
This shouldn't be a hard assignment - except for what to choose. Have fun!!
Dr. VW
Music That Defines Dr. VW
I could listen to this song over and over and over and… well, you get the point. This song/band was never popular, but still remains one of my favorites. It was considered "alternative" before alternative was recognized as a sub-genre.
This song reminds me of my brother, who is several years older than I am. I thought he was the coolest person ever when I was growing up (and he still kind of is). While he is responsible for several songs that I like, every time I hear this song I remember how much I like it (and him).
I could listen to any song from this album, actually… I just really like The Outfield. I think it's because it reminds me of the good times I had with my friends in high school (back when the earth was cooling).
This song is a relatively new addition to my list. There's something about the music that I just really like (and it's not the nonsensical lyrics)... sort of nouveau Bob Dylan. I'm not sure how long this will stay on my "Music That Defines Me" list, but for now it's in my top 6.
I really like big band swing music, and the music of this song just makes me happy! While the term “darktown” is no longer PC, this term simply refers to the part of the city that mostly housed African-Americans in the 1910s and how much fun it is to go to dance clubs in this section of town.
SONG THAT DEFINES ME. I am a huge Nirvana fan - I think I own every song in multiple formats. I was around when they toppled the heavy metal scene and introduced "grunge" as a totally new sub-genre. This was a really exciting time in popular music history (kind of like what happened when the Beatles came to the US). To be honest, it's not the lyrics that makes this the song that defines me; rather, it's the music's stripped down, hard edge that I identify with so strongly.
