Secondary General Music Lesson Ideas
The Art of
Critiquing
~ Music Reviews

Lesson Sequence
1. Ask students to read two current music reviews of the same piece of music and/or performance. Examples are below.
2. Discuss with the class some of the details that seem to appear consistently in the reviews (e.g., musical genre,
style, song description etc.) as well as some of the differences.
3. Pass out copies of the Music Review Worksheet. This worksheet will help guide students while writing their review.
4. Choose a piece of music. This piece will be used by all students.
5. Allow time for students to listen to the music multiple times. As they listen, prompt students to jot down key
information and impressions on their worksheet.
6. Once students have listened to the piece of music the needed number of times, ask them to write a 1 to 1 1/2 page
review using their notes.
7. Once completed, have the students exchange their review with a partner. These pairs should read each other's
review, then discuss similarities and differences.
