Harmony &

Polyphonic Texture

~ Descants

Lesson Sequence

1. Descants can also be used to create Harmony with a Polyphonic Texture.

Definition: A Descant is a second melody that is sung/played higher than the original melody.

You may think this definition seems similar to a Partner Song; however, a descant really cannot stand on its own.  Instead, a Descant is

composed specifically to go with the main melody.

2. Descants are not typically found in Top 40 music but you can find them in instrumental and choral music.  Listen to the excerpts below

of Stars and Stripes Forever and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing and see if you can hear the Descants.
