Battleship

Object of the Game

Be the first to sink all your opponent's 'battleships' (i.e., notes)

Materials

Staff/Game Board - one for each student (e.g., http://www.susanparadis.com/grand-staff-for-musical-battleship/)

Battleships/Game Pieces - 2 - 4 for each student (I use small pieces of paper with holes punched in various intervals -

triads, perfect fourths, etc. - that match the spacing of the Staff)

Hit or Miss Sheet/Record Sheet - one for each student (I use scrap pieces of paper then ask the students to create two

columns, one labeled "hit" and the other "miss" )

Marker Pieces - used to denote a "hit" on a battleship, students must have the same number as holes punched in the

game pieces (I use small decorative glass beads that have a flat side, readily found in the floral section of most craft stores)

Staff Reference - used to help students know how to call out each note (see last picture below)

Directions

1. Have students split into pairs, then turn their desks to face each other.

2. Hand out a game board, game pieces, a record sheet, and marker pieces to each student.

3. Set up a binder, or some other object, between players so they cannot see each other’s game boards.

4. Instruct each student to place their game pieces on any of the lines or spaces on the staff of the game board.

5. Decide which person will go first in each pair.

6. Player 1 will take one guess as to where Player 2 has their battleships (notes) placed on the staff.  They should state

either (1) which clef, the name of the note, and which line or space it is located (e.g., “Treble clef G on the

second line” or (2) the Grand Staff Octave Numbering (e.g., "G4").

If Player 2 does not have a playing piece on this coordinate, then it is a "miss".  Player 1 should mark the note, such as

Treble G 2nd line, on their record sheet as a reminder the note has already been called and was a miss.

If Player 2 does have a playing piece on this coordinate, they must place a marker piece on their game piece where

the "hit" occurred. Player 1 should record where the hit took place so that they do not call that coordinate again.

7. Play continues until one player has sunk all of his/her opponents' battleships (notes). This player is the winner.

Note:  Since there are so few "battleships", the game will go relatively quickly.  I usually ask my students to play best two

out of three or three out of five.
